2026/S1 Elder Conservatorium Lunchtime Concert | Piano Perspectives

Anna Grinberg - piano
Liam Viney - piano

Carl Vine - Piano Sonata No. 1
Robert Davidson - The Carnival of Extinct Animals

This program celebrates Australia’s rich contemporary music tradition through the artistry of the piano. Carl Vine, one of our nation’s foremost composers, gained prominence for his compositions for dance. In his first Piano Sonata (1990), he explores complex textures with interesting cross-rhythms and rhythmic drive, building up layers of resonance that vary from ‘pointed polyphony’ to being ‘granite-like in density, propelling the music irresistibly towards its climax.’ Closer to our current decade, Robert Davidson’s The Carnival of Extinct Animals (2021) offers musical portraits of extinct and endangered animals based on historical recordings. Currently featuring five animals, it is an ongoing project commemorating the species we have lost.
