2026/S1 Elder Conservatorium Lunchtime Concert | Twilight to Dawn
2026/S1 Elder Conservatorium Lunchtime Concert | Twilight to Dawn
Simon Cobcroft - cello
Anna Goldsworthy - piano
Lili Boulanger - D’un soir triste
Richard Mills - Sonata for Cello and Piano (2025)
Dmitri Shostakovich - Sonata for Cello and Piano in D minor, Op. 40
Despite Lili Boulanger’s modest output, the lasting popularity of her works is a testament to her precocious musical talent. Companion pieces D’un soir triste and D’un matin de printemps (also featured in our concert series, on Friday 5 June) are the final works she wrote: deeply contrasting, yet connected in their meditation on death. Richard Mills’s recent Sonata for Cello and Piano introduces a contemporary Australian voice, exploring the expressive potential of the duo with inventive textures. Written during a period of separation from his wife, Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata contains his trademark rhythmic drive, wit and intensity, creating a dynamic dialogue between cello and piano.
