The Magic Flute
State Opera South Australia is proud to present the Australian premiere of its must-see bold new production of Mozart’s beloved opera, The Magic Flute.
The original fantastical world has been reimagined to form the perfect backdrop to the glorious score for the modern stage. From soaring arias to mystical adventures, performed by some of Australia’s greatest performers, this production is an ideal first opera for new audiences — and a fresh, imaginative experience for devoted fans.
The Magic Flute is a timeless tale that follows Prince Tamino and Princess Pamina on a quest filled with magical trials and moments of profound self-discovery. Guided by courage, love and a magical flute, they navigate a world of fire and water, silence and temptation — where nothing is as it seems and everything is at stake. As their journey unfolds, The Magic Flute reveals itself as more than a fairytale: it is a celebration of universal themes of truth, transformation and harmony. Through soaring music and symbolic storytelling, the opera explores the balance between chaos and order, emotion and reason, reminding us that love, wisdom and inner strength can lead us from darkness into the light.
Directed by movie, theatre and opera director Shuang Zou, whose creative vision merges both Asian and European traditions, this production brings to life a fresh and captivating vision, expertly combining the operatic grandeur with cultural nuances of our time and place.
Renowned Australian production designer Dan Potra, whose remarkable work has graced stages across the globe, has created the breathtaking sets and costumes harnessing the most modern technology to transport you to a realm where magic, mystery, and wonder await at every turn.
Conducted by State Opera’s Artistic Director Dane Lam and performed with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, this new production is a world-first collaboration between State Opera South Australia, Opera Hong Kong and the Beijing Music Festival and exemplifies the new vision for the company - Opera Without Borders - a globally connected and artistically fearless institution— one that brings the world to Adelaide, and South Australia to the world.
Be part of this once-in-a-lifetime, spectacular celebration of artistry, culture, and world-class talent. Don’t miss The Magic Flute and get ready for the enchantment of grand opera suitable for all ages.
Showing at Her Majesty’s Theatre from 28 August – 6 September 2025, tickets start from $79. Under 30? Experience the magic for just $35.
