CINDERELLA (La Cenerentola)
CINDERELLA (La Cenerentola)
Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella) bursts onto the stage in a dazzling operatic retelling of the classic fairy tale – replacing glass slippers and fairy godmothers with exhilarating music, sparkling comedy and breathtaking vocal fireworks.
Directed by acclaimed Australian film, theatre and opera director Neil Armfield, and designed by Stephen Curtis, this vibrant new production places the beloved story in a retro 1970s setting. Fast-paced, witty and full of heart, Rossini’s score brings the familiar tale vividly to life.
Angelina – our Cinderella – lives under the thumb of her vain stepsisters and the blustering Don Magnifico. Yet despite their cruelty, she remains generous, thoughtful and quietly resilient. When Prince Ramiro arrives in search of true love, it’s Angelina’s kindness and integrity that capture his heart. Not through magic or disguise, but through the strength of her character.
Starring audience favourite Anna Dowsley as Angelina, alongside Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Don Magnifico and Helena Dix as Clorinda, the cast also features outstanding South Australian artists Nicholas Lester and Pelham Andrews. Conducted by Stuart Stratford, Music Director of Scottish Opera, this world-premiere production has been designed and created in Adelaide by State Opera South Australia.
Overflowing with warmth, humour and virtuosic singing, La Cenerentola plays like a smart romantic comedy powered by a live orchestra and extraordinary unamplified voices. For anyone who has ever wondered what a night at the opera truly feels like, this joyful production is the perfect invitation.
