Echo and Source

Join two former Presidents of the Australasian Double Reed Society for a program of delightful French music with award-winning pianist Michael Ierace.

This unique performance will feature the last works by both Saint Saens and Poulenc, including the rare chance to hear work of the only female composer of Les Six: an intriguing 1917 Trio by Poulenc’s friend and colleague Germaine Tailleferre … ending with Poulenc’s effervescent 1926 Trio, always among his own favourite pieces, dedicated to Manuel de Falla.
"…At the moment I am concentrating my last reserves on giving rarely considered instruments the chance to be heard…"
- Camille Saint Saens

"…The essential thing is that it be music. I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t write what I feel. If it gives the impression of being feminine, that’s fine. … I tried to do the best I could, but I never asked myself if it was feminine or not. If it is music, it is music."
- Germaine Tailleferre

“…the French have a keener sense of proportion. We realize that sombreness and good humour are not mutually exclusive. Our composers … write profound music, but when they do, it is leavened with that lightness of spirit without which life would be unendurable."
- Francis Poulenc
